Melbourne Flamenco is part of Bistrin's Emporium, a small boutique selling clothing and interesting things in Gertrude st Fitzroy. We have a range of cool clothing at very affordable prices. This includes homeware such as cups and saucers, teapots, vintage pieces, jewellery, and more recently Flamenco gear.

I recently put the word out that flamenco dancers could sell pieces that don't fit any more or they no longer use, and got a great response.
Today I sold a great pair of red shoes, and a new skirt to a new flamenco student.

If you have stuff that you can bear to part with, bring it in.

Diego Guerrero singing workshop

Melbourne Flamenco studio is proud to be able to host a singing workshop with Madrid based singer Diego Guerrero.

Diego is in Melbourne in March as part of an Australia wide tour.
His 9 piece band will be performing at the Melbourne Recital Center on March 10th.

This workshop is open to anyone interested in Flamenco. You don't have to be an accomplished singer. It will be fun and informative. Last year we learnt songs for a gypsy wedding with palmas (clapping). This year Diego will bring us new material to learn.

Flamenco is an art form composed of song and poetry, guitar and rhythm, and dance.
It keeps evolving as all art forms do. New instruments are added, and new innovations and collaborations involving other styles of music and dance.

Diego is an arranger and writer and collaborates with other artists including Jazz, Flamenco and South American music makers.

Dance classes have been available here in Melbourne over the years, but from my experience, it has been rare to be able to learn the sort of songs from a teacher such as Diego, who knows his stuff well, and is willing to pass it on.

This will be an invaluable experience for flamenco aficionados, students, and enthusiasts alike.

Melbourne Flamenco can provide a performance group for functions cabarets, weddings and other events with two, three, four, five, or more performers, depending on your requirements and budget. These include a dancer and guitarist, plus percussionist and second or third dancer etc. For a show such as a wedding, we would need at least 4 performers to create the right atmosphere.
note: A wooden floor is needed for flamenco performances.

Olayo Jimenez will reveal all during his Melbourne workshop
at Melbourne Flamenco on Sunday 18th September at 3pm.
It will go for at least 2 and a half hours.
This is an unmissable opportunity to gain an invaluable insight into three flamenco elements (song, dance, palmas) from a flamenco maestro.

Olayo Jimenez was born in Northern Spain into a Gypsy family of flamenco singers, dancers and basket makers, (canasteros). His grandmother "La Milia" was a flamenco singer and a friend of the great Carmen Amaya with whom she shared the stage when they both made their debut in Barcelona.

Cost: $50 Sounds like a bit, but it is a rare opportuniy as no one ever teaches this here, and there will be food and drink. It will be a fiesta. The night after their last show in Melbourne.

Israel Galvan- Sydney Opera House 2011

I flew to Sydney this week especially to see Israel Galvan, an avant guarde dance artist who crosses over in style between traditional flamenco and his own contemporary take on dance. His flamenco technique is masterful, so much so, that it seems he can throw it away and move to new realms: interesting ones, flights of fancy, imaginative and interpretive. Coming from strong flamenco roots within his family, who are dancers and singers, it seems that the traditional knowledge of the art form is so strongly under his belt that he is able to play and interpret in a new way.
His performance was unlike anything I have seen before.

After the show while he was being interviewed by Paul French from Flamenco Australia Magazine, I bought him an Australian beer and I got to ask him one question.

Flamenco dancers are highly trained athletes and after dancing for 75 minutes with only short breaks in between, Israel's black shirt was soaked through and clinging to his back.

"You use so much energy in your shows and you have to sustain it night after night. Do you have any tricks, secret tips or remedies that you use?"

Israel answers "Well I take vitamins and bee pollen and eat well; pasta, meat, bananas and chocolate for energy, but most of all one needs the will and desire to dance."

Israel Galvan was accompanied by singer David Lagos and guitarist Alfred Lagos, who complemented his work and added artistry of their own.

Also the encore they all took on Tuesday night was a nice surprise so if you get to see the show, make sure you clap alot at the end. It runs till Sunday 28th August.

Israel Galvan is a contemporary artistic flamenco performer, unique in terms of creativity.
He is coming to the Sydney Opera House from Tuesday 23rd to 28th of August.
Flamenco has moved ahead in artistry and creativity over the years, as have other dance forms, and it seems to me that apart from aficionados, audiences have not.

Flamenco has been put in a category of folk dancing from a particular region, southern Spain,
for a long time, when it has become so much more. It has always been a highly complex musical form and the dancers are not only greatly compotent percussionists but often great artists.

Ana Laura Cannilla is a flamenco teacher and dancer who lives in Madrid.
She studied at the National Spanish Dance School.
She will be offering a course over 5 weeks in the style of Nuevo Flamenco. (Google you tube Antonio Najarro to get an idea of the style. )

Classes will be on Tuesday evenings and will go for an hour and a quarter.
The level taught will be Intermediate to Advanced.
She will be teaching technique and choreography

Students at Melbourne Flamenco presented a show for friends and family on Saturday 11th of December. We also had guest artists performing: Anne Meagher-Whiting, Ling Chung, and Annabel Hay.
I want to say as director of Melbourne Flamenco that I am proud of all students and everyone who was involved as they did a wonderful job and pulled together a great and fun show in a short period of time. Thankyou to Paul French for photography. Merry Christmas and a happy new year to you all.

Enrique Morento

Sad news for Flamencos all over the world. Enrique Morento, flamenco singer died in Madrid at age 67 on Monday 13th of December.

Enrique Morente, born in 1942, was the patriarch of a Granada family of singers and artists considered central to contemporary flamenco in Spain. He was the father of three daughters including Estrella Morente, a star in her own right, and was married to dancer Aurora Carbonell.

Described by many as "the last flamenco poet" he was nevertheless one of the great renovators of the art.

He is shown here with Leonard Cohen.

He will be missed.
